Report: Tottenham could break transfer record to sign 'amazing' Bastoni alternative

Tottenham Hotspur have Alessandro Bastoni at the top of their list but could have to move for alternatives, with a move looking more difficult than ever.

Bastoni is said to be the top defensive target for Antonio Conte this summer. The Italian has been outstanding for Inter, and Conte is more than aware of his abilities from his own time at the club. However, according to The Evening Standard, Bastoni is not overly convinced on Spurs just yet. And with that, Tottenham are considering a move for RB Leipzig defender, Josko Gvardiol, instead.

The ‘amazing‘ Gvardiol is seen as one of the premier young defenders in world football. Reports have suggested Leipzig could ask for more than £67m for the defender. Of course, that fee would break Tottenham’s transfer record.

Tottenham are already on course for one of the busiest summers they’ve ever been involved with. Conte is wanting a host of new players, while a selection of Spurs first-teamers are expected to leave as well. The club are thought to be close to signing Ivan Perisic to kick off their summer.

Conte clearly admires Bastoni. But Inter Milan are trying to get their own house in order, and there’s a big chance that if Spurs do want Bastoni, then they need to be patient.

With Gvardiol, you feel there’s a chance for them to move early. However, he is a young man, and whether or not he is ready to instantly step in to the high pressure of what will be next season is open to question.

Either way, Tottenham needs to be decisive in their work here. Both are exceptional young defenders and both will cost the big bucks. Hopefully, for Conte anyway, the club can land at least one of Gvardiol and Bastoni.
