Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham have suffered yet another transfer blow in a summer of frustration as it has emerged that young striker Reo Griffiths has cancelled his youth contract and already departed the club despite having been one of the club’s leading talents.
The news comes from Football.London, who say that he is close to a move to French side Olympique Lyonnais, only weeks after The Sun reported that the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid are in the hunt for the exciting youngster.
Griffiths registered an incredible 27 goals in 20 games for the under 18s in 2017/18, including four against Arsenal in a 9-0 win, and had even been picked out by youth team manager Scott Parker as captain.
Now, he will leave White Hart Lane for France, or possibly elsewhere, and it will have a major impact on Tottenham. As one of the brightest talents and leaders of his age group, to lose him is a substantial blow.
Not only will losing his individual ability cause damage, but it will also send out a concerning message to fellow youngsters. Whilst Griffiths has not yet come close to the first team, it could in fact play against the club, suggesting that their brightest young talents may have more of a shot at regular game time at such a level by moving elsewhere, despite Mauricio Pochettino’s reputation for developing young players.
Even worse is that Griffiths’ decision to cancel his youth contract means that the club will not receive any kind of transfer fee until a compensation figure can be agreed, with no indication as of yet what kind of figure that may reach.
