According to a recent report, Tottenham are eager to land the signature of a highly-rated defender on the continent but Nottingham Forest currently lead the race.

The North Londoners are expected to undergo a squad revamp this summer with up to 10 players departing.

That’s to facilitate new additions having already signed Timo Werner from RB Leipzig and Archie Gray from Leeds United.

Now, they’re keen to add a central defender.

Tottenham want to sign Nikola Milenkovic

According to Corriere dello Sport, Tottenham are interested in Fiorentina centre-back Nikola Milenkovic this summer transfer window.

The 26-year-old, who has been dubbed the next Nemanja Vidic per GOAL, has impressed in Serie A since his move from Partizan in 2017 and now looks likely to depart for the Premier League.

Aston Villa and Fulham are also keeping tabs on the Serbia international but it’s Nottingham Forest who currently lead the race.

The East Midlanders have already launched a proposal and Fiorentina could accept the offer as it’s deemed an important one.

Spurs could yet make a late move for his signature but they have some catching up to do.

Tottenham should invest in Ashley Phillips

Rather than splashing the cash on a back-up centre-back, perhaps Ange Postecoglou should consider promoting Ashley Phillips to the first team.

The 2005-born centre-back had a really impressive loan spell at Championship outfit Plymouth Argyle last term and would benefit from a squad role with the Lilywhites.

Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero, Radu Dragusin and Phillips would be more than enough cover in the heart of the defence, so the club should allocate funds to other areas, particularly up front.
