Tottenham want to sign David Raya, two years after he tried to join Arsenal

90min reported this week that Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing David Raya – a player who was desperate to join Arsenal back in 2020.

Hugo Lloris will turn 36 next month and as good as the French international is, it’s time for Spurs to look for his successor. Brentford’s Raya would definitely be a great option.

Tottenham target David Raya was ready to force a move to Arsenal

Back in the summer of 2020, after Emiliano Martinez helped Arsenal win the FA Cup and the Community Shield, it was decided that the Argentine would be sold.

Mikel Arteta made it clear that he wanted Bernd Leno as his first-choice goalkeeper, which opened the door for Aston Villa to sign Martinez, much to the anger of many Arsenal supporters.

The Gunners were looking at potential replacements then and reports claimed Raya was Arteta’s top target.

The Daily Mail even revealed that Raya was so keen on the transfer that he was ready to force a move to the Emirates by handing in a transfer request at Brentford.

No move materialised in the end then but the goalkeeper, who is Spain’s World Cup squad, could now get a move to Arsenal’s fierce North London rivals, Tottenham.

Signing a player like Raya makes a lot of sense for Tottenham.

The Spaniard is still only 27, which is fairly young for a goalkeeper. He is a good shot-stopper, excellent with the ball at his feet and his distribution is among the best in the country.

Raya, branded as ‘incredible’ by Jurgen Klopp on BBC Sport, will enter the final 18 months of his contract in January. He’s adored at Brentford, but just like two years ago, he would surely love to make a move to a bigger club.

That could open the door for Spurs to sign him, and we must say, he would be a fantastic addition.
