Tottenham want to hand Hojbjerg a new contract – journalist

Journalist Ben Jacobs has told the Last Word on Spurs podcast that Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is a player Tottenham Hotspur want to offer a new contract to, though he was not too sure how close any agreement is.

Hojbjerg has proved to be a brilliant signing for Spurs. He arrived for £15 million. And he has been a mainstay of the side ever since.

He has not always been a fan favourite. His form dipped after an impressive first season in which he was one of the only good performers during the latter stages of Jose Mourinho’s tenure.

But the arrival of Rodrigo Bentancur appeared to be a turning point for the Dane. The pair have formed an amazing partnership. And Hojbjerg has stepped up in a big way for Spurs over the last 12 months.

The 27-year-old’s current contract expires in 2025, according to Transfermarkt. So he is approaching the final couple of years of his current terms.

Jacobs was asked about which deals Tottenham are working on amongst the current squad. And he suggested that there is indeed interest in extending the former Bayern Munich man’s stay.

“I know that Dier’s not the most popular. But I’ve always been under the understanding that Tottenham would be offering a new deal there,” he told the Last Word on Spurs.

“And Hojbjerg again, a player that they would like to offer improved terms to. Not entirely sure what the status there is in terms of if anything has started already.”

It makes perfect sense for Tottenham to look at agreeing a new contract with Hojbjerg. He will only be 29 by the time his current deal expires. He will have plenty more to give by the time that contract runs out.

Certainly, Tottenham have a midfield partnership and attack they can build their squad around in the coming years. And Hojbjerg is a key part of that structure right now.

Only Kevin De Bruyne has played a greater number of progressive passes in the Premier League this season, according to FBRef.

So it will be a good piece of business if Tottenham tie him down to a longer deal.
