The three best and worst performers in Tottenham’s victory over Manchester City

Erik Lamela

He had the opportunity to put the game beyond doubt from the penalty spot, but he failed to make it count. This was even more disappointing as he forced Son Heung-Min to let him take the spot-kick. The South Korean has been excellent form and should have been given the chance to extend his scoring run, but Lamela pulled rank. It is things like this that have the potential to ruin the impressive team spirit that has been built at the club.

Jesus Navas

This was a great opportunity for Jesus Navas to show what he can do in the absence of Kevin de Bruyne. He hasn’t been given many minutes since Pep Guardiola took over and it was clear that he isn’t suited to the new style.

Navas enjoys running at defenders with his pace and supplying crosses into the area. Guardiola wants his side to play a passing game, tiring the opposition out and creating space to exploit. This limits the effectiveness that Navas can have and that was evident from this display.

Aleksandar Kolarov

It was a disappointing performance from the defender, which started with an own goal to give Tottenham the lead. The Serbian didn’t manage to recover and was targeted by Spurs for the entire game. He has undergone somewhat of a transformation under Pep Guardiola, but Sunday was a reminder that he still can’t be fully trusted.

If he puts in many more performances like the one at White Hart Lane, he could quickly find himself surplus to requirements. Guardiola is a perfectionist and he will certainly be watching Kolarov closely over the coming weeks.
