The managerial circus surrounding Tottenham Hotspur has reached another chapter. Paulo Fonseca was expected to be the next boss, but now, a move has fallen through due to financial obstacles. Tottenham legend Graham Roberts has called for the club to bring Glenn Hoddle back.
Antonio Conte was supposedly the man on the verge of replacing Jose Mourinho. While that was on the verge of happening, the move broke down. Doubts over Tottenham’s long-term vision and a difference in wages saw it fail. Then, Fabio Paratici came in and suggested Paulo Fonseca.
But now, BBC Sport claim Spurs are looking for another manager with talks breaking down for the ex-Roma gaffer. The report claims that Gennaro Gattuso’s unexpected Fiorentina exit – 22 days after joining – could have played a part in Fonseca and Spurs talks ending. Gattuso could replace him.
The Independent claim that talks are underway to now bring Italy and Milan legend Gattuso to Spurs. Some reports even claim a deal has been struck between Spurs and the man who once confronted Joe Jordan during Harry Redknapp’s era. But Roberts has another suggestion, in Hoddle.
Why Hoddle simply cannot return to Tottenham – despite Roberts backing
Those who know – or remember – what Hoddle was like in terms of management, is that he was before his time. That might work in his favour. But 63-year-old Hoddle last managed a club in 2006, when he left Wolverhampton Wanderers. That is a huge 15 years ago.
Of course, he is a big Tottenham fan and clocked up 590 appearances for Spurs before managing the club for two years. But to be out of the managerial loop for 15 years, and then to come back in to a job like Spurs – it is too much of an ask.
