Leicester City loanee Youri Tielemans says he expects to return to AS Monaco this summer.

The Belgium international has impressed during his short stint at the King Power Stadium, making 12 appearances and scoring three goals. He’s also contributed four assists, and speculation has been rife about his next move.

Leicester are understood to be very keen to keep Tielemans permanently, while Tottenham Hotspur have also been credited with interest (The Telegraph, January 2019).

Monaco want £40 million for the 22-year-old report The Metro, but the midfielder told VTM Nieuws: “I expect that I will return to Monaco in the summer, unless something’s moving.

“At the moment there’s nothing. If things are going well you want to keep it like that. I don’t know what Monaco will be asking, so I can’t talk about it.”

TBR’s view

Surely this is simply Tielemans stating a protocol and not him actually committing to his parent club.

AS Monaco are in real danger of being relegated from Ligue 1, and sit 17th in the league table on 33 points but by virtue of a better goal difference than Caen. The midfielder cannot possibly play in a second-tier league having shown he can cut it in the Premier League.

Tielemans is the exact kind of player Spurs need this summer having lost Mousa Dembele in January.

Not only is Tielemans physically very good, but he has impressive technical qualities too.

He says he expects to return to France, but Spurs shouldn’t dither and must give him a real reason to return to England for 2019/20.
