Tottenham transfer news: It is unclear whether Conte target wants to join Spurs now
The Sun report that Spurs’ search for a new option on the right of their defence has led them to explore bringing Walker-Peters back to the club.
Manchester United have been credited with an interest in the England international as they potentially look to replace Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
Chelsea have also been linked, although they have Reece James, when fit, and are struggling under Graham Potter so far.
Unclear whether Walker-Peters wants to go back to Tottenham
Obviously plenty has changed since Walker-Peters left Spurs and he has used the regular football he has got at Southampton to kick his career on to the next level.
That has got him into the England picture, although of course the quality of the right-backs the country has means establishing himself regularly there will be difficult.
Spurs still have not sorted out their right wing-back situation, despite having signed one under their past three managers.
It would not be a surprise if Walker-Peters wanted to go elsewhere, although perhaps Spurs could offer him more gametime than United and Chelsea.
“Fair play to the lad as well,” said Sky pundit Paul Merson after the defender made his England debut last year. “That’s the most important thing.
“The lad has been let go by Tottenham really. Then, he goes there and, for me, he has been absolutely outstanding.
“He thoroughly deserves his debut for England. A good player. He’s learnt a good way to play. I mean, it’s a top club Tottenham, so he is going to learn how to defend very well there and he has done great.
“They do find their players Southampton. Even though they have a great academy, but over the years, they do find a gem. Look at the lad who is playing in his position now, Royal, how much did they buy him for? £50 or £40 million?”
