Tottenham transfer news: £23m player does not want to leave in January
The Athletic report that the deadline for Spurs to renew his contract passed at the turn of the year and he will not be signing another one.
Given his deal expires in the summer, this transfer window represents Spurs’ last chance to get a transfer fee through the door for the £23 million man.
But there does not look to be any prospect of that, with Lucas preferring a more lucrative exit as a free agent in the summer.
Lucas does not want to leave Tottenham in January
The report says he is set for a meeting with his representatives in the coming weeks to plot his next move ahead of the summer.
It seems Tottenham have made peace with losing Moura, but the more immediate concern is his fitness, and he has not played since October.
It would still be helpful for Antonio Conte to have the Brazilian available for the closing months of the winger’s Spurs contract.
In the meantime, it seems Spurs are prioritising another forward this month, perhaps influenced by Lucas’ extended injury absence.
In truth, those fitness struggles may well have made it hard to find a suitor this month anyway, and Lucas’ contract situation would have meant Spurs could not have raised much by selling him.
It remains to be seen where he goes next, although the report says he is not in a rush to go back to his native Brazil.
Bryan Gil has emerged in recent games as an option on the right of the Spurs’ front three, and has perhaps leapt ahead of Lucas in the pecking order.
But we will only be able to get a true gauge of that when Lucas returns to fitness, whenever that turns out to be.
