Tottenham told they’ve got an ‘incredible’ defender who is a bit like Arsenal’s William Saliba

There were several standout players as Tottenham bounced back from their Leicester draw to thump Everton 4-0.

The biggest surprise of the opening Premier League weekend was Tottenham‘s draw to Leicester – the second biggest surprise was that Spurs only scored once against the Foxes.

Ange Postecoglou’s side continued to create an abundance of chances against Everton, but this time his side were far more clinical.

Yves Bissouma opened the scoring with a thunderous effort from range and Heung Min-Son opened his goalscoring account with a brace – either side of Cristian Romero’s second-half header.

Spurs also looked more organised defensively and kept their first clean sheet of the season with Micky van de Ven receiving praise from Alan Shearer for his role at the back.

Tottenham defender compared to William Saliba

In Romero and Micky Van de Ven, Tottenham now have one of the strongest centre-back pairings in the Premier League.

The Argentine’s aggression and aerial dominance pairs well with Van de Ven’s pace and reading of the game. Even under Postecoglou’s gung-ho style of play, Spurs can expect plenty more clean sheets to come this season.

TalkSPORT pundit Andy Townsend also highlighted Van de Ven after the Everton win, and drew comparisons to Arsenal‘s William Saliba.

“I like Micky van de Ven, I think he’s an exceptional talent,” Townsend said.

“Again, he’s one of these breed of modern centre-halves – a bit like William Saliba – who are so quick and so powerful.

“When he bursts forward, as he did for Son’s goal, he ran about 60 yards like a 100-metre sprinter, straight through the middle of the field.

“His pace is incredible.”

Spurs have one of the Premier League’s best

A lengthy debate could be held around who is the Premier League’s best centre-back at the moment.

Arsenal’s central duo of Saliba and Gabriel are certainly in the debate, although Saliba himself said Virgil van Dijk is the Premier League’s best defender.

Van de Ven and Romero fall in the category below – for now – but a good season could easily see them enter the conversation.
