Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly interested in signing Real Madrid star Mariano.
According to Diario Gol, the Dominican Republic international has emerged as a possible target for Spurs having failed to live up to his billing at the Bernabeu.
The 25-year-old rejoined Real last summer after impressing at Lyon, but made just 22 appearances in his first season back, scoring four goals.
Mariano endured an injury-hit campaign, which allowed Karim Benzema to continue as a regular in the side.
With Zinedine Zidane now back at the helm, the star’s future is in some doubt, especially with Luka Jovic and Eden Hazard having both already signed.
There’s a good chance Real will make more signings before the start of the new season, meaning Spurs might be in luck if their interest is genuine.
Harry Kane has gone largely unchallenged at Tottenham for the past few years.
He is undoubtedly a world-class striker and is sure to play most games for the club while he is there.
Over the last couple of years though he hasn’t had the strongest competition, with Fernando Llorente having proven to be an underwhelming signing.
The Spaniard – who is technically now a free agent – did make life difficult for defenders off the bench at times and was useful in the Champions League, but his record of 13 goals in 66 appearances for the club was disappointing.
He was not the sharpest in front of goal, but Mariano could well be the man to keep £200,000-a-week talisman Kane (Spotrac) on his toes.
His brilliant 21-goal season at Lyon is proof he knows where the net is, and his pace and movement in the box could be a real weapon for Tottenham.
