Tottenham are reportedly one of the teams interested in Borussia Dortmund midfielder Julian Weigl.

According to BILD, Spurs are keen on the 23-year-old’s signature alongside Paris Saint-Germain and Roma.

But the report details that Bundesliga club Dortmund would prefer to keep hold of the German through the January transfer window, as he provides cover in the squad for the second half of the season.

Weigl has fallen out of favour at Dortmund and made just eight senior appearances across all competitions this season.

But he’s got unfulfilled potential that Mauricio Pochettino could tap into if the central midfielder becomes a long-term target and eventually joins Spurs.

Weigl is most effective as a deep-lying playmaker and can dominate game with his range of passing and control of possession.

The pass master has racked up 135 appearances for Dortmund, but his career has stagnated of late and a fresh move should get him back on track.

Spurs may be in need of a new defensive midfielder in the future to help fill the inevitable void that Mousa Dembele will leave and the Dortmund ace ticks a lot of boxes.

The fact he’s still on the radar of some European heavyweights suggests the best is yet to come from him and he could be a great match in Pochettino’s attacking-based team.
