Tottenham Hotspur suffered a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Everton on Sunday afternoon in their opening Premier League match of the 2020-21 campaign – and Spurs fans have discussed Matt Doherty’s debut following his move from Wolves.
Doherty, 28, ended a 10-year spell at Wolves where he clocked up 302 appearances in all competitions – scoring 28 goals and creating a further 41. He has signed a four-year deal at Spurs, with Wolves receiving a fee of £15million.
He was handed a start against Everton on Sunday despite playing twice during the international break for Ireland. It saw him come in for Serge Aurier, who was left on the bench by Jose Mourinho – as the Ivorian continues to be linked with a move.

However, Doherty struggled – as did the rest of the Tottenham side. Carlo Ancelotti’s new signings in Allan, Abdoulaye Doucoure and James Rodriguez shone through, earning a 1-0 win thanks to Dom Calvert-Lewin’s header.
Richarlison gave Doherty plenty of problems on Tottenham’s right flank and although Doherty coped well enough, he was unable to prevent Everton from bagging all three points. It was more of the same for Spurs fans, following last season.
Tottenham supporters, though, reacted to Doherty’s performance and many were impressed with what they saw of the Ireland ace – before he was substituted in the 76th minute by Mourinho and replaced by Tanguy Ndombele.
