Tottenham Hotspur narrowly secured all three points on Sunday evening as Gareth Bale’s header proved the decisive moment in a game full of controversy – and Spurs fans have applauded the efforts of winger Erik Lamela.
Jose Mourinho chose to start Lamela in a front three alongside Harry Kane and Son Heung-min, while the likes of Sergio Reguilon, Eric Dier, Matt Doherty and Moussa Sissoko were given the nod elsewhere on the pitch.
Spurs took the lead in the first half as an aerial challenge from Adam Lallana saw Harry Kane hit the deck. The decision was somewhat soft and there were question marks over whether it was in the box – but VAR gave a penalty.
Kane stepped up to score, only for Tariq Lamptey to equalise in the second half. In the build up to the goal, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was taken down by Solly March – but even after watching on the monitor, the goal was not reversed.
Lamela, who earns £80,000 a week (Spotrac) at Spurs, performed admirably and even hit the post with a 25-yard strike. But on 70 minutes, the Argentina international was replaced by Gareth Bale – who scored the winner.
The Welshman’s first goal since his return saw Spurs win all three points, as he headed home from eight yards out after a brilliant cross from Sergio Reguilon. While Bale will nab the headlines, Lamela earned praise from fans.
