Jan Vertonghen is reportedly closing in on a move to Portuguese side Benfica this summer after his contract at Tottenham Hotspur came to and end – and Spurs fans have responded on Twitter.
Vertonghen, 33, left Tottenham earlier this summer after his contract with the north London club expired. He did stay with Spurs until the end of the season, but he has now left the club.
The left-footed defender joined Spurs way back in 2012 from Ajax and has since clocked up 315 appearances for Tottenham – becoming a favourite among supporters. Some even called for him to be given a new deal.

Belgian outlet HLN have claimed that Vertonghen is undergoing a medical at Benfica on Thursday and it is believed the 118-time international is due to sign a three-year contract with the Portuguese side on Friday.
It sees Vertonghen join a side that won the Portuguese title last season and will play in next season’s Champions League. After eight years without a trophy at Spurs, he could well pick up some silverware in Portugal.
Tottenham supporters have reacted to the reported news that Vertonghen could be on his way to Benfica this summer, and many have wished him well and urged him to have success at his new club.
