Tanguy Ndombele has told French newspaper L’Equipe, as quoted by the Evening Standard, that he feels he is currently below the quality of Manchester United star Paul Pogba and Chelsea ace N’Golo Kante.
Ndombele, 22, finally completed a move to Tottenham earlier this summer for a club-record £62million from Olympique Lyonnais. It sees Spurs finally replace the loss of Mousa Dembele, who left in January.
The France international is believed to be somewhat of a coup for Spurs after shining in the Champions League with Lyon last season, in which he helped Lyon beat Manchester City and scored twice against Hoffenheim.
Asked whether he felt he was on the level of Premier League stars and France teammates Pogba and Kante, Ndombele said he is not yet capable of the level they are performing at – but that he is confident he can get there.
“I am not going to say that I am far away, but [Kante and Pogba] are ahead of me. There is work to do, I need to continue to hustle. They became world champions, so automatically they are ahead of me,” Ndombele said.
“They have more experience than me too. I see it in training during sequences. These little details, movements, turns. I am eternally unsatisfied, so I will continue to learn.”
TBR’s view – Ndombele close to Pogba level, Tottenham will help
The difference between Pogba and Kane to Tottenham’s newest signing is purely that Ndombele has been playing in the top tier of French football, while the Chelsea and Manchester United stars are in the Premier League.
Ndombele has a mix of both Kante and Pogba. Slightly more defensive than Pogba, Ndombele is able to drive forward and has the long kind of stride that Pogba boasts. But he has the defensive intelligence of Kante.
Yes, he probably is correct that he is below the level of both United star Pogba and £150,000-a-week (Spotrac) Kante, but he has the potential to go a step ahead of the aforementioned duo.
