Jan Vertonghen has completed a move to Portuguese giants Benfica after his contract came to an end at Tottenham Hotspur at the end of the season – but one Spurs player is not happy with his choice of club.
Vertonghen, 33, ended his eight-year stay at Tottenham at the end of last season – though he did decide to remain with the north Londoners until the season finished. He clocked up 315 appearances in a Tottenham shirt.
The left-footed centre-back attracted interest from numerous Serie A and Spanish sides after he became a free agent, while English clubs Manchester City and Wolves were loosely linked with the 118-time Belgium international.
However, Vertonghen has chosen to join Benfica where he could finally win some silverware after Benfica won the league title last season – and will play in next season’s Champions League. He signed a three-year deal.
Vertonghen was one of three signings announced by Benfica on Friday, with German striker Luca Waldschmidt and Brazilian attacker Everton Soares all joining the league champions – who have recently appointed Jorge Jesus.
But one Spurs player is not impressed with the move. Eric Dier, who came through the ranks at Sporting Lisbon and remains a fan of his old side, posted a picture of Vertonghen with the caption: “Thought we were friends.”
