Tottenham star Moussa Sissoko struggles in France defeat, get’s 3/10 for ‘catastrophic’ display

Tottenham midfielder Moussa Sissoko was played out of position by France boss Didier Deschamps and it resulted in a below-par performance for the 31-year-old.

The Spurs performer was deployed wide on the right against Finland with Sissoko giving away a penalty during a shock 2-0 defeat.

The ex-Newcastle man has been in decent form this season but the French faithful certainly weren’t impressed with his performance.

Sissoko has featured for Tottenham 11 times during the current campaign but has largely been used in a more central role.

After last night’s contest, Sissoko bore the brunt of Foot Mercato’s criticism as they gave him a 3/10 for his display.

The player ratings piece claimed: “A catastrophic first period. There is, of course, the condemnable loss of ball at the heart of the game which leads to the Finnish goal. Before that one, he had already lost atrociously two balls on simple passes.

“Not in the right tempo, he often left his land to come into the heart of the game but did not bring his usual acceleration. A little better in the second half, even if he rarely chose the right solution.”

TBR View – Deschamps must take a portion of the criticism

Quite why you’d call up a player who is playing well for his club in a central role and then play him out wide remains a mystery.

With that in mind, the France head coach must take some of the criticism for the way in which he chose to utilise the experienced player.

Les Bleus are the reigning world champions so one would presume square pegs in round holes shouldn’t really be happening.

The £80,000-a-week player has been largely brilliant under Jose Mourinho at Tottenham.

He can perhaps feel a little bit disappointed that his international boss chose to play in a position he’s not entirely accustomed to.
