Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane has called on some of his teammates to focus on the team to benefit their own careers.

Spurs currently have a contingent of players who are out of contract in the summer, and some have been accused of letting their situation affect performance on the pitch.

Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen and Christian Eriksen all stand to leave on frees at the end of the season.

Alderweireld and Eriksen have both been offered new deals in the past but have shown no indication they will agree extensions.

The Denmark international in particular has come in for a lot of criticism this season having produced a string of sub-par performances.

In the eyes of Kane, such players must improve to boost their own career prospects as well as to help the team. He said (Sky Sports): “Obviously in the transfer window just gone, there were players who maybe wanted to leave, and it was public knowledge that there were players close to leaving who stayed.

“You have to kind of put your individual needs to one side and make sure you’re performing to the highest level, because that will help your individual status anyway.”

TBR’s view

Kane is right – it is important for the accused players to raise their game, if anything to ensure more options for them if they do want to move on in the summer.

If their hearts are no longer in the team, then that should be the thing that motivates them.

Eriksen has been really poor so far and his situation is making him a target for fans.

It is making for a negative atmosphere and that isn’t helping as the club struggle to get positive results.
