Jan Vertonghen continued his excellent start to life at Benfica on Thursday night since leaving Tottenham Hotspur to join the Benfica side – and both Tottenham star Moussa Sissoko and ex-teammate Kieran Trippier responded to his Instagram.
Vertonghen, 33, ended an eight-year spell at Tottenham in which he clocked up an enormous 315 appearances for the north London side – when he left Spurs on a free transfer. Many were interested in the summer, but he chose to join Benfica.
He has since been a regular under the guidance of Jorge Jesus, clocking up 15 of Benfica’s 17 matches this season. On Thursday night, Benfica were tasked with bettering Rangers’ result to finish top of their Europa League group.
Captaining Benfica, Vertonghen’s side drew 2-2 with Belgian outfit Standard Liege allowing Rangers to finish in first as they beat Lech Poznan 2-0 in Poland. Nevertheless, Benfica qualified and Vertonghen posted on Instagram after the match.
Vertonghen is one of a number of players to have joined Benfica in the summer, with Jesus spending big. Indeed, Nicolas Otamendi moved to the club from Manchester City – as well as Darwin Nunez, Everton, Luca Waldschmidt and plenty more.
Spurs also qualified for the last 32 of the competition after finishing top of their group, and Sissoko – who made a substitute performance for Jose Mourinho’s side – commented, saying “this Jan guy is smart”. Trippier posted some emojis.
