Diogo Jota netted his first goal for Liverpool after coming on as a substitute to make his Premier League debut against Arsenal – and he posted on Instagram after the match, prompting reaction from Liverpool players and Tottenham’s Matt Doherty.
Jota, 23, was a surprise £45million addition at Liverpool earlier this month, just a day after the signing of Thiago was completed. He made his Liverpool debut as a substitute in a 7-2 win over Lincoln City in the Carabao Cup last week.
The former Wolverhampton Wanderers man was the brought on with Liverpool leading Arsenal 2-1 at Anfield – replacing Sadio Mane who had netted earlier in the match. Controlling the ball on his chest, 18 yards out, Jota lashed a volley into the net.
Jota posted his delight on Instagram after the match, following his first goal for Liverpool. He described the moment he found the back of the net, leaving Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno with no chance – with a three-word verdict: “what a moment”.
Though Liverpool boast Divock Origi, Xherdan Shaqiri, Curtis Jones and others – they have lacked a player that supporters can say could actually rival the first-choice front three of Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mo Salah.
But Jota can do that and it is clear that his Liverpool teammates are already impressed. Jordan Henderson, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Fabinho, Rhian Brewster and others replied – congratulating Jota.
Spurs star Doherty also responded – following the duo’s time together at Wolves, commenting a one-word verdict of “splendid”. Fabinho’s message is translated as: “Congratulations mate, first of many”.
