Tottenham need to ensure the long-term future of defender Jan Vertonghen, as his performances last season suggest he’s still got some time at the top level.
The 32-year-old enforcer is one of the more senior players within the Spurs squad, but was extremely consistent during the last campaign and is a key player under manager Mauricio Pochettino.
He cost the North London club £10million (Daily Mail) back in 2012 and he’s turned out to be an immense bargain.
Spurs tied down Ben Davies and Harry Winks to new contracts on Monday, something that they should now look to deal with Vertonghen.
The Belgium international is currently out of contract in 2020 and is entering the final year of his deal with Pochettino’s team.
He is still a first-choice centre-back in the squad and the club should prioritise a new deal for him.

Vertonghen played 34 times across all competitions last season, helping his side to finish runners-up in the Champions League and also secure another top-four finish in the Premier League.
The left-footed defender is a leader in the heart of the backline and has a great partnership next to Toby Alderweireld.
He also proved he can step into the left-back role if short on numbers, something he did excellently with a goal and assist in a vital win over Borussia Dortmund in a Champions League last-16 tie.
Spurs definitely have a talented young group of players that are striving for silverware, but need some experienced heads around like Vertonghen too.
