Tottenham should not consider paying £20m for young Hull hotshot Bowen

Tottenham are interested in signing Hull City forward Jarrod Bowen in this month’s transfer window, according to Sky Sports.

They report that the EFL Cup semi-finalists are in the hunt for a young English talent to add to their squad after failing to land Jack Grealish in the summer.

The reported asking price for Bowen is around £20m, following the success of James Maddison, who has had an impressive first top flight season after joining from Championship outfit Norwich in the summer transfer window.

But in mid-December, the Sun reported that the price Hull wanted for Bowen was just £5m amid interest from relegation battlers Fulham and Cardiff City.

So, amid Tottenham’s interest, it appears that the asking price has jumped up 400 per cent and Daniel Levy will need to show his characteristic patience and toughness in negotiations to get it back down to a more realistic level.

There is of course a separate conversation to be had over whether Tottenham should be seeking Championship talent to add to a squad with title ambitions, in competition with free-spending sides such as Liverpool and Manchester City.

It feels like Bowen, like Grealish, may well be seen as an investment opportunity; a chance for the club to exploit a Championship outfit’s shaky financial footing to secure an English player who will increase in value.

Meanwhile, Liverpool and City have forensically improved their weaknesses with well-informed, big-money swoops in recent times and Spurs need more than an overpriced Bowen to compete with that.
