Tottenham should make summer move for Brighton’s Adam Webster

It’s well known in the football world that Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho wants to sign a new central defender if he can.

January didn’t yield any results for the Spurs boss on this front. The likes of Milan Skriniar remained in Milan, while Sergio Ramos is another name who is said to be interesting Mourinho. The Spaniard’s deal in Madrid still not sorted ahead of the summer.

However, Skriniar will likely cost upwards of £40m at least. Ramos, meanwhile, is well into his 30s and despite being an obvious winner and world-class defender, would he really be the perfect option right now?

Spurs need someone who they can look to build around in the future. And one man who has stood out in recent weeks is Brighton defender, Adam Webster.

The giant centre-back, signed from Bristol City for £20m (Guardian) in 2019, is proving a snip. His performance against Spurs a week or so ago was impressive enough. But Webster hasn’t rested on his laurels, and followed it up with a performance against Liverpool that had commentator Chris Sutton describe him as ‘wonderful’.

Could it be, then, that the solution to Mourinho’s problem lies right under his nose in the Premier League?

Dominating presence

As mentioned, Webster has excelled himself against both Spurs and Liverpool lately. He did come off against Burnley yesterday with 15 to play, but it’s the performances mentioned that caught the eye.

In particular, against Liverpool, Webster was imperious. Per Whoscored, he made a team high and game high nine clearances. Quite impressively too, Webster also completed just shy of 80% of his passes, while he had a 50% success rate in his long balls from the back.

Modern football requires defenders to not only defender, but be comfortable on the ball. Webster is certainly showing those qualities and seems to be growing in stature by the week.

At 26, the Brighton man should see his prime years in the coming seasons. For Spurs, he could be just what the doctor ordered for Jose Mourinho this summer.
