Tottenham Hotspur’s defence is in need of an overhaul.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side managed to shut out Red Star Belgrade last night in the Champions League for their first away win (4-0) of the season, but in recent times Spurs have been very shaky at the back.
In total this season they have conceded 25 in all competitions already, and the form of usually dependable duo Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen has been particularly alarming.

The Belgian internationals are both in the final year of their contracts, and will leave the club on free transfers as things currently stand.
It certainly seems as though Alderweireld will be moving on, with Vertonghen having recently suggested he is in extension talks and that he feels good ‘in every single way’ at the club (Guardian).
Spurs need to make a big statement in one of the next two windows, and one way of doing that would be to land highly rated RB Leipzig star, Dayot Upamecano.
TBR’s view – Upamecano’s quality and promise undeniable
Spurs should be all over a move for the 21-year-old Frenchman, who is without any doubt one of Europe’s most exciting young defenders.

Upamecano has a rare mix of pace, power, defensive intelligence and the ability to play out from the back.
He would be a brilliant capture by Tottenham, who would be losing those things in Alderweireld.
The talent has been linked with a move to bitter rivals Arsenal (Bild), meaning it would be a huge statement if they managed to land him.
Certainly, Spurs’ backline needs rejuvenating and getting Upamecano would be a means of doing that.
