Tottenham should have pursued Maddison instead of £40m-rated Grealish

Tottenham Hotspur were hot on the trail of Aston Villa wonderkid Jack Grealish for most of the summer.

According to varying reports, Spurs headed the chase for Grealish, who was rated at £40m by Aston Villa.

But rather than chasing Grealish all summer (to no avail), Tottenham should have pursued Leicester City’s James Maddison.

The 21-year-old moved from Norwich City to Leicester after a magnificent season at Carrow Road.

And for a reported £20m, it looks like Leicester grabbed a bargain. Maddison was half the price that Grealish would have cost Spurs.

Maddison and Grealish are both very talented young attacking midfielders. But Maddison has better end product, he is younger and he was half as expensive.

Last season, Grealish picked up three goals and six assists in 30 Championship games. Meanwhile, Maddison’s tally of 14 goals and eight assists in 44 games eclipsed that.

And this season, Maddison has already stepped up to the Premier League with ease, scoring three times and setting up two more goals.

But Grealish, in a lower division, has played four more games, scored no goals and registered just one assist.

Grealish, 23, has a lot of potential but at 21-years-old Maddison has already overtaken him and is outshining him on a regular basis.

Spurs made a real error pursuing the wrong starlet in the summer window.
