Tottenham Hotspur put Manchester United to the sword at Old Trafford on Monday night. Mauricio Pochettino’s side came out with a sumptuous performance to bag a 3-0 win over their rivals.
The star player on the night was Lucas Moura. The Brazilian put in a brilliant performance, scoring two goals as Tottenham won a huge three points.
He is finally starting to look like the player that PSG paid £38.5 million for in 2012, angering Manchester United’s legendary boss Sir Alex Ferguson in the process.
Six years ago, the Scot was trying to get United prepared for his upcoming retirement. So young talent was being targeted in the transfer market. One such player was Lucas Moura. Sir Alex confirmed he was a big fan of the player, but PSG blew United out the water with their offer to Sao Paulo.
“I find it quite amazing that a club can pay 45 million euros for a 19-year-old boy.
“To tell everyone that PSG are here they’ve signed Thiago Silva and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. They must have spent about £150million in the last month.”
It left Ferguson fuming and Moura headed to the French capital.
But he never truly settled into a regular first-team role in France. After spending much of 2017-18 on the bench, he joined Tottenham for what now looks a bargain £23 million in January.
If he can keep up this sort of form, it will be easy to see why Sir Alex was so upset to miss out on his signature six years ago.
