Tottenham round-up: Swap deal lined up involving Inter Milan’s Marcelo Brozovic; latest on Schalke’s Max Meyer

With the international break drawing to a close, attentions begin to turn back to club football and inevitably the Premier League. One player who Tottenham may not be seeing again this season through injury is their Argentine wide-man Erik Lamela, who is suffering from a continually troubling hip problem, and reports emerging from Italy have been enough for talkSPORT to reckon Spurs fans may not be seeing the winger again.

The reason for this is that a player swap deal is thought to be being weighed-up with Inter Milan, which could see Croatia midfielder Marcelo Brozovic heading to North London.

Inter are thought to be interested in bringing in Lamela and offloading their wanted man in midfield, who is being watched by a string of suitors including Premier League rivals Manchester United and high-flying Ligue 1 outfit Monaco.

Lamela remains out injured for the time being, but could still be offloaded by the North Londoners since he is not thought to be a key part of Mauricio Pochettino’s plans in the long-term. Lamela could be available to Inter and other suitors for roughly £8.6million, but a straight-swap between the two would be a more suitable option, particularly with Spurs unwilling to overstretch their finances as they press on with readying their new stadium.

The swap deal would also, quite crucially, suit Tottenham, with Brozovic a player they are reportedly keen to bring in to bolster their options in midfield and help mould the side which has just fallen short in the title race for the last two seasons into serious contenders.

Elsewhere on the transfer front, Schalke midfielder Max Meyer, reported to have been targeted by Spurs during the summer, has told Bild Sport that there is a 50/50 chance that he will leave the Bundesliga side at the end of the season, after his contract talks at the Veltins Arena stalled.

“There have been no further talks,” Meyer said.

With the player under contract with the Gelsenkirchen outfit until 2018, the coming summer would be Schalke’s opportunity to cash in big on the 21-year-old should he turn down the option to extend his current deal, which may put Mauricio Pochettino and Tottenham on red alert.

When quizzed by Bild on whether he was interested in remaining with the club, the Germany U-21 international replied: “Why not? I can perceive both things. The chances are 50-50.”

It is thought that Schalke may be prepared to part ways with the midfielder if they were to receive an offer in excess of 20million euros, despite the fact that Spurs’ offer during the summer was thought to be a sum of 45million euros. Thus, waiting a further year to potentially sign the midfielder at a cut-price deal may prove to be a shrewd piece of business from the North Londoners if they are to make an official approach, and like the proposed arrival of Brozovic would add more depth to their midfield.
