Although much speculation ahead of this summer’s transfer business will be around who may enter the revolving door at Tottenham rather than head the other way, with this season’s summer signings having disappointed, rumours have inevitably gathered over potential departures.
One name that has repeatedly come up in the press is that of Moussa Sissoko, a £30 million signing from Newcastle who was struggled for form at White Hart Lane and found himself pushed more and more towards the periphery at the club.
Yet despite reports linking the France international to a departure, the wide man, who recaptured some of his best form for his country during Euro 2016 last year, has declared his intention to remain at Spurs.
In an Instagram live video, as reported by Football.London, he addressed several questions about his future in North London saying: “I’m not leaving Tottenham at the moment. I’m very happy.”
Sissoko was subject to fierce criticism from club manager Mauricio Pochettino in November, after he had been left out of the match-day squad to face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, with the Argentine admitting that the 27-year-old record signing was not living up to expectations and must apply more energy and work-rate in training. Since that match he has started only four more games, the last of those being the FA Cup win over Wycombe back in January, and a lack of minutes may be detrimental to his international prospects before too long, so he must regain his form if he is to remain with the club in the long-term.
Another misfire of a signing for the club who has been linked with a move away is Netherlands international Vincent Janssen. The North Londoners are still thought to be paying AZ Alkmaar the instalments of the £20million transfer fee it cost to bring the forward to White Hart Lane, but despite netting 27 goals in the Eredivisie last season, Janssen has struggled to make an impact in the Premier League, scoring one goal from open play in all competitions and deprived of game-time thanks to the imperious form of Harry Kane.
Although Kane is set for a spell on the sidelines with an ankle injury, Janssen was still unable to bag himself a start in Tottenham’s last game against Southampton, with Pochettino preferring to deploy Son Heung-Min in the centre forward role. Spurs may, therefore, look to take as minimal a financial hit as possible and tie-up a deal for the forward to return to Dutch football at the end of the season, according to the Daily Mirror.
If Pochettino opts to offload the striker, then Spurs will almost definitely be in the market for another forward at the end of the season in order to add some much needed depth to the squad, which has at times proven an Achilles’ heel for the club this season, with them having struggled when dealing with injuries to key players in key areas.
