The Mirror have reported this morning that Tottenham are set to make a move to tie down the services of Belgian defender Toby Alderweireld in a big-money contract extension.
The 28-year-old currently earns £50,000-a-week at White Hart Lane but amidst interest from Inter Milan – as reported by Sky Sports Italia’s Gianluca Di Marzio – Spurs are now considering doubling it.
This would see Alderweireld earn the same amount as both Harry Kane and Hugo Lloris, who are currently the highest paid players at the club.
His current deal still has two years left to run until 2019 but Tottenham have the option to extend this by another year should they wish, and it’s believed that they are already planning to activate it.
The Belgian has become a critical part of Maurico Pochettino’s side since arriving in North London from Atletico Madrid back in 2015, forming a solid partnership with fellow Belgian Jan Vertonghen.
In less promising news for Tottenham supporters, the The Sun have claimed this morning that fierce rivals Arsenal are growing increasingly confident that they’ve beaten them to sign Thomas Lemar.
The Monaco winger has been the subject of an ongoing battle between the two London sides throughout the summer and, with the window opening on Saturday, Arsenal have stolen a march.

It is believed that Arsene Wenger has made the 21-year-old his top priority this summer and is now on the brink of agreeing a £30million deal for the French youngster ahead of a move to the Emirates.
Despite Tottenham being able to offer Lemar Champions League football next season, it is now understood that the Monaco winger is more tempted by the opportunity to link up with Wenger.
Lemar played an integral role in a surprise Monaco outfit last season, helping them win the Ligue One title and reach the Champions League semi-finals, scoring 11 goals in 46 appearances.
Finally, according to reports in the Mirror last night, Tottenham are considering a bid for Southampton and Portugal right-back Cedric Soares to replace the outgoing Kyle Walker.
With Sky Sports reporting a fortnight ago that negotiations between Spurs and Manchester City are underway over the movement of Walker to the Etihad, Pochettino is in need of another full-back.
And it is believed that Southampton’s 25-year-old right-back is the Argentine’s preferred replacement – although he may have to battle with Barcelona and Juventus for his signature.
Soare, who arrived from Sporting Lisbon two years ago, signed a new four-year deal at St Mary’s last summer but is now expected to be subject to increased interest from Europe’s top sides.
