Tottenham are closing in on their first signing of the summer in the form of Ajax defender Davinson Sanchez. The Telegraph report that a deal is close, with the sticking point being how quickly the fee will be paid to the Dutch club. Spurs are willing to pay around £28 million up front and £14 million in add-ons to sign the centre back. Ajax want the fee to be paid quicker, but an agreement is likely to be found soon.
It is important for Spurs to get a signing through the door soon, as the supporters have grown restless at the lack of progress. Sanchez would be a great signing, as he has the profile of a player that will benefit from working under Mauricio Pochettino. He won’t be an immediate starter, but he will provide more depth at centre back. The possibility of playing him in a back three alongside Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld is an exciting one.
The signing of Sanchez could open up the possibility of a centre back leaving the club. The Telegraph report that West Brom are in talks with Tottenham over a £15 million transfer for Kevin Wimmer. Tony Pulis has made a move for the player this week and is hopeful of clinching a deal during the coming days. The Austrian defender is available for transfer and negotiations are now at an advanced stage between the two clubs.
If the club does manage to sign Sanchez, there will no longer be a place for Wimmer. The 24-year-old was already limited to how many first team appearance he was given by Pochettino and they would be even fewer if the Ajax defender does join the club. They would be bringing in a good fee for the player and this would represent a good piece of business for the club. It is important to balance the books in the transfer market and moving on unwanted players is crucial to that.
Another player that could depart the club this summer is Moussa Sissoko. The Evening Standard report that the midfielder is expected to leave, but the player himself has denied exit rumours on social media. Trabzonspor had revealed that they are interested in the French international, but they couldn’t reach an agreement with Spurs for the midfielder.
There is a chance that Sissoko remains with the club, as he started the first game of the season against Newcastle United. His performance wasn’t great, but the fact that he was given the start underlined the lack of depth at the club. They wouldn’t be able to move him on unless they make a signing in midfield and that looks unlikely at this stage. If they could secure a good fee for him, it would be the right decision to move him on, but that doesn’t seem likely right now.
