Tottenham Hotspur are working on a new contract for young defender Japhet Tanganga after an impressive pre-season.
Italian outlet TMW report that the defender caught the eye during the summer programme and that work over a new deal for him is underway.
Tottenham’s official website reported back in June that Tanganga had signed a new deal but it only runs until 2020 – so it’s likely this contract is aimed at securing his long-term future.
The 20-year-old may be liable to being plucked away a rival for as long as his contract situation remains fairly precarious and Tottenham wouldn’t want that to happen with Belgian duo Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen nearing the end of their careers.

At 20 years old, the time could be right for Tanganga to break into the Spurs first team, especially given the injury Juan Foyth picked up in pre-season.
If he continues to perform as he did in pre-season then he’s got every chance of impressing Mauricio Pochettino and proving he’s worthy of a long-term deal at the club.
Pochettino has shown he will give opportunities to young players – to a greater extent than almost any other manager in the Premier League – and Tanganga will hope he can be the next cab off the rank.
