Tottenham reportedly want player that Fonseca labelled 'very intelligent' in 2020

Tottenham reportedly want Roma captain Lorenzo Pellegrini this summer, though Jose Mourinho is desperate to keep him. The midfielder is attracting plenty of interest and not just from Spurs, with Liverpool also keen. Back in 2020, Paulo Fonseca labelled him as a “very intelligent” player.

Pellegrini, 24, was sensational for Roma under Fonseca. Last season, he had a hand in 20 goals from midfield after being given the captain’s armband – following a fall-out between Fonseca and Edin Dzeko. Pellegrini already has more than 200 club appearances to his name – 152 in a Roma shirt.

Little surprise, then, that Tottenham are interested. Il Messaggero claim Fonseca – who is set to join Spurs – wants Pellegrini to join him. Meanwhile, According to the Mirror, Liverpool are also keen. The Mirror say that Pellegrini has a £30million release clause. Fonseca is clearly a fan.

“He is a very intelligent player who looks for the right spaces, the right time to pass, and is so good at choosing the right option. It’s impressive, especially for one so young,” Fonseca said back in 2020 about Pellegrini, as quoted by Tribal Football.

What On Earth Is Going On With The Copa America?

Pellegrini under Fonseca at Tottenham could be a perfect mix

It is a move that suits all parties. Tottenham need a midfielder that can sit alongside Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, but progress the ball from midfield to attack. Hojbjerg is better being a defensive midfielder, while Tanguy Ndombele and Gio Lo Celso are better in the 10 role – as is Dele Alli.

Not only is Pellegrini the kind of midfielder Spurs need, but he would also shine under Fonseca in North London. Fonseca got the best out of a player that is getting better with every season. At Tottenham, under Fonseca, Pellegrini has the platform to become a world beater.
