Tottenham reportedly want defender that Lucescu claimed Conte wanted at Inter, before he joined Juve
Tottenham reportedly want to sign Juventus defender Merih Demiral from Antonio Conte’s former side this summer. Conte is reportedly closing in on the vacant Tottenham role, and Demiral could end up joining him. It was previously claimed that Conte tried to get him at Inter.
Demiral, 23, has endured a tricky couple of seasons at Juventus. He managed just eight appearances in his first season before suffering an anterior cruciate ligament problem. During 2020-21, he has played 24 times in all competitions but remains firmly down the pecking order.
Indeed, Matthijs de Ligt, Leonardo Bonucci, Giorgio Chiellini and others are above Demiral in the order. Now, Alasdair Gold has claimed the 20-time Turkey international is an option for Tottenham ahead of the summer window. Calciomercato claim that Juventus rate Demiral at £35million.
Speaking at the beginning of the 20-21 campaign, Dynamo Kiev manager Mircea Lucescu is quoted by One Football as saying that Conte tried to sign Demiral at Inter. The interest from Conte came when Demiral was at Turkish SuperLig side Alanyaspor – but Demiral moved to Juve instead.
“Moro, one of my scouts from my time at Brescia and former Inter scout, came to Turkey to see him for the Nerazzurri,” ex-Inter boss Lucescu claims. “Inter wanted him but Juventus , however, proved to be smarter than all.”
Is Demiral good enough for Tottenham? Conte reckons so…
If Conte wanted to take him to Inter from Alanyaspor, he will surely feel that Demiral would be a good addition at Tottenham. Spurs are in desperate need of central defenders with Eric Dier, Toby Alderweireld and Davinson Sanchez all struggling to cut out the mistakes. Demiral can help with that.
Though he is not a regular for Juventus, he is certainly good enough to play here and there for the Old Lady. What is crucial, is that he is still very young with massive resale value – something that will interest Daniel Levy. If Spurs can get Demiral for around £25million, then it is a very good signing.
