Tottenham reportedly want an attacking star that van der Vaart claim is his country's best player
Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly in the mix for Lyon captain Memphis Depay, with the player’s contract about to expire. He is considered among the best players in European football right now. A verdict from Rafael van der Vaart in March will surely excite Tottenham fans.
Depay, 27, has enjoyed another brilliant season with Lyon. Despite a recent ACL injury, the ex-Manchester United man had a hand in 22 goals and laid on 12 assists during the 2020-21 campaign. On Wednesday night, he scored a gorgeous brace against Scotland in a Euro 2020 warm-up match.
FC Inter News claim that Inter Milan and Barcelona remain keen on Depay – who has wage demands of just £83,000 a week. But that Tottenham are now also interested, as they edge closer to appointing Antonio Conte. The report also says Depay wants a three-year deal and the option of a fourth.
Speaking about Depay in March, van der Vaart told media that he believes the Lyon attacker is the best player currently playing for the Netherlands. Now available on a free transfer, Tottenham fans will surely be excited by the claim van der Vaart made about Depay.
“I am really annoyed by the hassle around Memphis”, Van der Vaart said on Studio Football – as per Live Football On TV. “I also get text messages from friends with: ‘Change that guy’. It’s our best player. Sure, we haven’t seen him against Turkey, but he creates so much. Every time there is something.”
Can Tottenham really convince Depay to move to London – following van der Vaart claim?
The likelihood is that Depay will join Barcelona. It will see him move to a club where Ronald Koeman – his former Dutch boss – is current manager. Inter Milan may struggle to get him with Conte leaving. If Conte joins Spurs, that might convince Depay – but something else needs to happen.
Harry Kane probably needs to go. Depay has thrived at Lyon because he is their best player. If Kane stays, then Depay is going to overshadowed and clearly, that is something he would like to avoid. If Kane goes and Conte joins, it is not beyond the realms of reality to see Depay move to Spurs.
