Tottenham reportedly eye highly-rated defender that was recently compared to Rio Ferdinand
Tottenham are desperately in need of central defenders. The latest name Fabio Paratici is reportedly considering is Wolfsburg’s Maxence Lacroix. Though he is hardly a household name, the Bundesliga’s recent comparision will come as music to Spurs fans ears – likening him to Rio Ferdinand.
Lacroix, 21, only joined Wolfsburg from Sochaux last summer. But the French colossus has been magnificent for the German side. Clocking up 30 Bundesliga appearances last season, the Frenchman was responsible for Wolfsburg conceding just 33 goals – and keeping a superb 13 clean sheets.
Young, powerful, quick and excellent in the air. Little surprise, then, that Fabrizio Romano has claimed in his Here We Go podcast that he is on a list of targets at Tottenham – compiled by Fabio Paratici. On the official Bundesliga website, they compare his style of play to Rio Ferdinand.
“A centre-back cut from the ‘tall and lean’ mould, rather than ‘big and hulky’ variety, Lacroix has a certain grace on the ball that is reminiscent of ex-Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand in his prime. Similarly able to glide out of defence and pick a forward pass,” the Bundesliga site claims.
“His elegance masks a steely will to win and a healthy aggression. In 2020/21, for example, he was among the top 30 players league wide for passing accuracy (87 percent) while also coming out on top in an impressive 59 percent of his tackles,” the Bundesliga’s official page continues.
Lacroix is the perfect signing for Tottenham, amid Ferdinand comparison
Tottenham lack a centre-back that is above making regular mistakes, but also boasts plenty of pace. A bit of nastiness, too. Eric Dier and Toby Alderweireld lack that bite, and pace. Davinson Sanchez has it, but he makes far too many mistakes. They need a defender like Ferdinand.
Lacroix is young, but already showing a maturity in his game which prevents constant mistakes. Almost one clean sheet every two games is proof of that in a stuttering Wolfsburg side. Quick with a massive length of stride, he is the perfect signing for Tottenham this summer.
