Tottenham reportedly eye 22-year-old that van der Vaart raved about in 2019
Tottenham Hotspur reportedly want to sign Juventus defender Matthijs de Ligt, and Rafael van der Vaart’s comments from 2019 will have fans excited.
De Ligt, 22, joined Juventus in 2019 from Ajax. A couple of months earlier, he was part of the side that Spurs beat in the Champions League semi-final.
Signing a five-year deal, De Ligt has a contract until the summer of 2024. Of course, Fabio Paratici brought him to Juventus – as Juve’s sporting director.
Now at Tottenham, the Spurs transfer chief is looking to sign the Dutch international for a second time. In fact, the report says Spurs want two.
The report says that Spurs are ready to go as high as £116.5million – £30million for Kulusevski and a club-record £86.5million for de Ligt.
What has van der Vaart said about de Ligt, with Tottenham keen?
A fellow countryman of de Ligt, van der Vaart is excited by the Netherlands defender. Back in 2019, he gave an exciting verdict on the centre-back.
“The boy is extremely talented, he has a lot of quality, even if he made two or three mistakes against Germany,” van der Vaart told Sport1 in 2019.
“He has the charisma and self-confidence of a 30-year-old. He is already a great role model for many talents in the Netherlands.”
Tottenham need a defender. Eric Dier’s form is up and down, while Davinson Sanchez is hardly the answer. Joe Rodon is still learning.
Cristian Romero remains a new signing and Spurs fans are still working him out. Nuno might want to play three at the back and numbers are key.
Of course, if de Ligt joined, the Juve defender would easily be first choice. Could he be tempted by Spurs? Unlikely.
