Tottenham ‘pushing hard’ to sign midfielder who Roy Keane called ‘pure quality’

Tottenham Hotspur are stepping up their efforts to sign England international Angel Gomes on a free transfer this summer, TBR Football exclusively understands.

Gomes, who earned his first four caps for England last year, has been on Tottenham’s radar for some time now.

TBR first shared news that Tottenham were keeping close tabs on Gomes last October, a 24-year-old who will be available as a free agent this summer.

Gomes has made 133 appearances for Lille but his contract is set to expire with the side.

The former Manchester United man is already attracting interest from a host of sides across Europe, and Spurs are trying to position themselves at the front of the queue.

Graeme Bailey – TBR Football’s chief correspondent, understands that Tottenham are now ‘pushing hard’ to land Gomes’ signature.

Spurs were in talks with Gomes and his Lille teammate Jonathan David in December, although it looks as if the Canadian will be heading elsewhere.

Barcelona are leading the chase for David, whereas Gomes is considering his options and a return to England is possible.

Tottenham have made Gomes an offer to move to north London, but the midfielder’s former club Man United are not entirely out of the picture, even if they are yet to push ahead with an offer.

West Ham have made a bid for Gomes, as TBR revealed last month, and there’s plenty of interest on the continent, too.

Sides all over Europe are showing an interest in Gomes and the midfielder has offers in Germany, Italy and Spain, whilst there is also an option in France with Lyon.

Gomes’ former boss Paulo Fonseca is now in charge at the club, and he was the man who converted him into a deep-lying playmaker, someone he remains very close with.

Roy Keane has already given his Angel Gomes verdict

Of course, in the wake of Roy Keane’s criticism of James Maddison, which the midfielder responded to on Sunday, it’s interesting to read the pundit’s view on Gomes.

Whilst he was thriving for England last October, Keane described Gomes as ‘pure quality’, taking a more complimentary tone than he did with Maddison.

Gomes provided a brilliant assist for Jack Grealish to score against Finland in a 3-1 win away from home, one that Keane enjoyed.

Speaking on ITV Football, he said: “Yeah, real bit of quality. A brilliant goal. If we saw France or Spain scoring a goal like this, we’d be praising him [Gomes]. But, yeah, nice and patient.

“Here England, Gomes obviously just do what you do, pass it forward, and he just seems to wander in there. Jack draws a few players over, which obviously helps him eventually, when he gets in there.

“But this pass again, Trent, nice and simple. Sharp these couple of touch on Gomes and this last piece, honestly, I think pure quality, lovely and obviously Jack then finishes it off. But really lovely bit of quality.”
