Tottenham: Pochettino says only “special players” will sign this window; Kane rebuffs China offer

Mauricio Pochettino has today put pain to the hopes any Tottenham fans may have had about their club spending money on players this week, claiming that Spurs will only invest in strengthening their squad if a ‘special player’ becomes available, writes the London Evening Standard‘s Tom Collomosse.

Contrary to recent speculation linking the club with Inter duo Andrea Ranocchia and Andrea Pinamonti, it seems that Pochettino is indeed happy with his squad and won’t be targeting any specific additions to his side, even with defender Jan Vertonghen facing an extended period on the sidelines.

Both Kevin Wimmer and Ben Davies have stepped in to fill the void left by Vertonghen in recent games, but when Calciomercato broke the news of the club’s supposed contact with Ranocchia’s representatives, it ignited speculation that former Espanyol boss Pochettino may indeed have been looking to the transfer market to help plug the hole in his defence. However, it seems that the club have now distanced themselves from such rumours, with Pochettino ready to stick, rather than twist on this occasion.

“I told you from the first day of the month that we are not thinking to sign players,” he told the Evening Standard. “If some special player becomes available who is a very good option, then maybe, but it hasn’t happened yet.

“Nothing is impossible because a player can arrive at the last moment but I don’t believe we will sign anyone.”

Tottenham’s lack of investment in the transfer window is likely to be in part thanks to the policy adopted by the North London club of tying down the club’s current key players on improved contracts, with Dele Alli, Harry Kane, Hugo Lloris, Jan Vertonghen and Danny Rose just a handful to have agreed new deals since the end of last season.

With little news of anything come in through the revolving door before the transfer window slams shut next Tuesday, Spurs supporters can be buoyed by the news that nobody of note is likely to be heading the other way, even in the aftermath of Tom Carroll’s departure to Swansea City.

At least, if anybody does manage to depart over the next five days, it won’t be the club’s leading scorer Harry Kane, after London Evening Standard reported that the England international turned down the chance to speak to representatives of big-spending Chinese Super League club Shanghai SIPG, who are managed by former Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas. The Portuguese head coach is reportedly keen on bringing former colleagues Kane and Danny Rose to the Far East, after working with both players during his spell at White Hart Lane from July 2012 to December 2013.

After receiving contact from intermediaries from China interested in whether the forward would be partial to any potential transfer, the discussion between both parties was brief, Kane reportedly informing his representatives that he had no interest in leaving North London, with the potential terms of any contract not even reaching the point of discussion.

Kane has been vocal in the media about his desire to stay with the North Londoners, and this latest revelation comes just days after the striker told Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport [quotes only available offline] that it would be a ‘stupid’ decision to leave Tottenham. Kane said:

“I would be surprised if any of my team-mates were to leave now.

“Something’s going on here, we’re just missing that last step – to win trophies. It would be stupid to leave now.”

“We have one of the best coaches in the world, perhaps the best,” added Kane. “Soon there will be a new stadium. The future is promising.”
