Olivier Giroud has been the subject of intense speculation during the January transfer window but should Tottenham pounce on deadline day?

The Frenchman has been linked by various outlets to several clubs during this window and it remains to be seen if he will move.

Giroud hasn’t found himself in Frank Lampard’s plans this season. The club legend has preferred Tammy Abraham in attack, forcing the World Cup winner to kick his heels on the sidelines.

The 33-year-old has featured in just seven games in all competitions and moving on would be wise.

A report from the Daily Mail recently claimed that Giroud would prefer to stay in London and that should open the door wide open for Tottenham.

Even if Jose Mourinho only landed Giroud on loan, it would still represent a solid piece of business by the club.

Tottenham are in need of a striker. Harry Kane is set to miss the rest of the season with a hamstring problem and that leaves Mourinho extremely short.

Giroud is a man for the big occasion. Of his 78 Premier League goals, 15 have come in games against Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool or Tottenham.

Underrated

He has been a hardworking centre-forward during the Premier League-era who hasn’t always totally earned the respect he deserves.

Chelsea are fourth in the league this season and there is a suggestion that Giroud has been underused.

Lampard has given the kids a chance to impress but the Frenchman’s experience might have been better utilised on occasions.

Tottenham are just six points away from the Blues in fourth. Mourinho will be desperate to earn Champions League football and Giroud could be just the striker.

The £110,000-a-week (Spotrac) forward would relish the chance to prove Lampard wrong.

Mourinho would be wise to ask Tottenham to sanction the signing of Giroud and give his squad a lift.
