Tottenham now want to sign ‘underrated’ goalkeeper who Rafael Van der Vaart says is so good with his feet - journalist

Journalist Dean Jones has told GiveMeSport that Tottenham Hotspur are now eyeing a move for Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer

Spurs will seemingly be facing the prospect of lining up Hugo Lloris’ successor over the next year as the Frenchman heads towards the end of his contract in north London.

The 35-year-old signed a new deal with Antonio Conte’s men earlier this year that runs until 2024.

The Spurs captain is now heading towards the end of his career and Tottenham are seemingly lining up possible replacements.

Tottenham have been linked with moves for Premier League shot stoppers like Jordan Pickford and Islan Meslier. But they are seemingly keeping tabs on Switzerland’s number one goalkeeper Sommer as well.

Spurs eyeing Sommer

Jones has told GiveMeSport that Spurs are monitoring Sommer’s situation in Germany as the 34-year-old’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season.

“Yann Sommer is one that I’ve been told is on the radar,” the journalist said.

“They’re just looking to see what he’s looking to do next. So, I think various things will crop up.”

The experienced shot stopper has just appeared at his third World Cup with Switzerland but was knocked out in the last-16 after Portugal put six past him.

Sommer has been ever present between the sticks for Monchengladbach and has racked up a total of 335 appearances for the club.

The Swiss star is attracting interest from the Premier League as he approaches the end of his deal with Monchengladbach. ESPN reports that Manchester United are already working on a deal to sign him for free next summer.

His performances have certainly caught the eye in Germany and he’s received praise from Spurs cult hero Van der Vaart, who labelled Sommer as a better player with ball at his feet than the entire Schalke side back in 2020.

“[Sommer] is better with his feet than most outfield players of Schalke,” he said.

“That’s not a joke – I really believe that.” as transcribed by Bundesliga’s official website.

Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has also labelled Sommer as ‘one of the most underrated’ goalkeepers in Europe

TBR View: Spurs need a younger replacement for Lloris

There’s no doubt that Sommer is a brilliant goalkeeper and is very capable with the ball at his feet, which is something Spurs have been lacking.

But at 34, Sommer is only a year younger than Lloris and would not be an ideal fit for a long-term successor for the Frenchman.

That being said, the Swiss shot stopper could be a smart stop–gap signing for Spurs while they secure a younger replacement for Lloris, especially if he’s available for free over the summer.
