Tottenham now want to sign £20m defender who makes twice as many fouls as Cristian Romero

Tottenham Hotspur have a big summer transfer window ahead of them.

Indeed, while winning the Europa League was a saving grace for Spurs last season, the north London club can’t mask the fact they finished 17th in the Premier League last season.

Serious improvements are needed at Tottenham, and one area that Spurs seem to be prioritising is the defence.

Kevin Danso has already signed permanently, while Kota Takai is set to arrive at Tottenham in the near future.

Another centre-back could be added to the squad soon too, as according to Ben Jacobs, Spurs are now keen on another defensive option.

Tottenham ask about Koni De Winter

According to Jacobs, Tottenham have now asked about signing Koni De Winter from Genoa.

De Winter is said to be valued at €25m (£20m), and at the age of just 23, he’s one for the future too.

Of course, this comes amid rumours of Cristian Romero’s potential departure from Tottenham, and it’s interesting to compare De Winter’s stats to Romero.

Cristian RomeroKoni De Winter
1.9Tackles per game1.3
1.2Interceptions per game1
0.8Fouls per game1.7
2.3Aerial duels won per game3

Romero has made his name as a very aggressive defender, but De Winter actually makes more than twice as many fouls as his Argentine counterpart, while also making fewer tackles and interceptions.

This would potentially be a downgrade if Tottenham went from Romero to De Winter, and Spurs may want to consider this carefully before proceeding.

Recent Tottenham signings from Serie A

Tottenham are looking at bringing in another player from Serie A here, and that’s not at all surprising.

Indeed, Fabio Paratici is still involved at Tottenham, and this sort of move has his fingerprints all over it.

Spurs have made numerous signings from Serie A in recent years under Paratici’s guidance, and, more often than not, these deals have worked out.

Dejan Kulusevski£25m
Rodrigo Bentancur£21m
Cristian Romero£42m

Tottenham haven’t had many major flops from Serie A in recent times, while they’ve had some major successes here as Dejan Kulusevski was arguably Spurs’ best player last season and Cristian Romero remains a key component at Tottenham.

De Winter would be another arrival from the Italian league and if it is indeed Paratici pushing this deal, it could end up being a decent move.
