Tottenham Hotspur are looking to bolster their defensive ranks in the January transfer window.

Lately, speculation has been intensifying with regards to Spurs‘ interest in Genoa’s Radu Dragusin.

However, he’s not the only central defender Tottenham are reportedly considering a move for in the January transfer window.

There have been links between Spurs and Union Saint-Gilloise centre-back Koki Machida in recent weeks too.

Now, a report from Voetbal Belgie has provided some fresh information about Tottenham’s interest in the Japan international.

USG currently sit top of the Belgian top flight and, understandably, would like to keep hold of their players until the end of the season.

However, the report claims that the Saint-Gilles outfit may find that difficult because ‘there is interest from Tottenham’ in Machida.

USG may consider selling the 26-year-old – who they paid less than £1million for – if Spurs make an offer of €10-15million (£8.5-13million).

Koki Machida a decent shout for Tottenham Hotspur

Machida has been shining in his first season in Europe, clocking up 24 appearances in all competitions and helping his team go top of the Belgian table.

When the 6ft 3in defender has been on the pitch, USG have conceded more than one goal on only one occasion. They have shipped just 20 goals in 20 league games.

Machida has also won five caps for Japan, having made his debut in September this year.

He has played against Ange Postecoglou’s Yokohama F Marinos on a few occasions during their time together in the J-League.

Machida, who played for Kashima Antlers, has helped them beat Postecoglou’s side multiple times.

He was also in the winning starting XI as USG beat Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool 2-1 in the Europa League in December.

Tottenham really do need to bolster their defensive ranks. While Van de Ven and Cristian Romero are a formidable pairing, Spurs don’t have much quality beyond them.

And as we’ve seen in recent weeks, an injury crisis can spring up out of nowhere, so strength in depth is absolutely crucial for any club.
