Tottenham are now favourites to sign Morato from Benfica – a player who got his chance in football thanks to Jan Vertonghen.
That is according to Record in Portugal.
So, what is the situation involving Morato and Tottenham? Let’s take a look…
Tottenham favourites to sign Morato
Well – according to Record – Fulham and Nottingham Forest are also keen to sign the Brazilian.
However, it is Tottenham who currently lead the race to secure Morato’s signature.
The South American – who is said to have a £68m release clause – has been monitored by Spurs for some time now, which is why the north Londoners are best placed to sign the defender.
Morato has made 27 appearances in all competitions so far this season, providing two assists.
The Benfica No.5 coincidentally got his chance in senior football at Benfica following an injury to Vertonghen – as detailed by Goal – at the start of the 2021/22 campaign.

Since then, Morato – who has been compared to Aymeric Laporte – has not looked back, amassing 77 appearances in total for the Portuguese giants.
Ange Postecoglou could be looking to upgrade on Ben Davies
The interest in Morato suggests Ange Postecoglou could be keen to sign an upgrade on Ben Davies – in our view at least.
The Wales international is capable of playing at left-back or as a central defender at Spurs.
Coincidentally, Morato is also able to play in both of those areas, and at the age of just 22, the Brazilian would represent a much fresher option compared to the 30-year-old Davies.

The Benfica colossus has made 18 appearances on the left of defence this season, while playing eight games in the centre.
After all, it would be something of a shock to see Morato arrive and be used purely in the middle, following the £26m signing of Radu Dragusin in January, which makes us think Davies could be the one at risk of falling down the pecking order.
Only time will tell what Postecoglou is thinking, so be sure to keep an eye on this situation.
