Tottenham, Newcastle, Wolves reportedly want £4m bargain that Bundesliga site likens to Lewandowski
Tottenham Hotspur and three other Premier League clubs are battling to land Schalke talent Matthew Hoppe, with just £4million needed. He impressed for Schalke last term, despite their relegation. So much so, that he has been likened to Robert Lewandowski on the Bundesliga website.
Hoppe, 20, scored six goals in 22 Bundesliga games for Schalke. While they were relegated to the second tier of German football, Hoppe was electric and probably the club’s only shining light in 2020-21. Schalke recorded just three wins all season and Hoppe was instrumental in two of those.
The USA ace scored a hat-trick in a 4-0 win over Hoffenheim, and during a win over Frankfurt – got a goal and an assist. 90Min claim Tottenham, Wolves, Newcastle and Southampton are all keen on Hoppe – and that he will only cost £4million. A bargain, given the Lewandowski comparison.
Comparing him to Lewandowski, the Bundesliga site says: “Ok, admittedly Hoppe still has a long way to go, but he has all the attributes to do so. Tall and lithe but with a strong frame, the American has a knack of losing his marker at just the right time, clever movement.
“Right-footed, but can also score with his left, with his head and from outside the box. The teen talent was called up to first-team training for the first time in November 2020, and his time rubbing shoulders with the pros has already helped him progress in Lewy-esque leaps and bounds.”
Which club suits Hoppe, the new Lewandowski best… Tottenham? Wolves?
Newcastle need reinforcements all over the park and so do Southampton. While both have good solid starting strikers in Danny Ings and Callum Wilson, both are somewhat injury prone. Behind them, they do not have the kind of striker with the same ability. Hoppe is far from that right now.
But he has the potential to surpass them. He needs game time to do so and at Newcastle or Southampton he would certainly get it. Hoppe would at Wolves too, with Raul Jimenez coming back but Willian Jose departing. At Tottenham, he would really struggle to play regularly.
