Tottenham need to prioritise upgrading right-back options in the summer

Tottenham slipped to a frustrating 2-0 defeat away to Chelsea on Wednesday night in the Premier League and are in danger of being dragged back into the top four race if they are not careful.

Spurs defender Kieran Trppier was one of the worst performers for the visitors at Stamford Bridge and it’s not the first time this campaign he’s struggled.

His latest display should convince manager Mauricio Pochettino to upgrade the right-back position in the summer.

Trippier struggled defensively against Chelsea as he was caught out several times and also scored a dreadful own goal to gift their opponents three points.

The 28-year-old tapped the ball into his own net after poor communication and awareness between himself and goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

Trippier has not looked himself this campaign and has massively dipped from the dizzy heights he set last summer in the World Cup with England.

He’s not showing the consistency to be a regular starter at full-back, while Serge Aurier is rash and Kyle Walker-Peters is still a developing talent.

Pochettino needs to prioritise finding a top-class right-back that can arrive in the summer and immediately make a better impact.

Spurs don’t look a solid defensive unit when Trippier starts and with him declining it would make perfect sense to go out in the summer to make a marquee full-back addition.
