Tottenham nearly signed 'world-class' midfielder this summer, he'd have pushed them above Liverpool - TBR View
It’s safe to say the Premier League title isn’t quite the two-horse race so many assumed it would be this year, with Liverpool and Man City dropping points already.
The likes of Tottenham and Arsenal are putting the pressure on the top two in England while Manchester United are finding their feet under Erik ten Hag, and Chelsea shouldn’t be counted out now with Graham Potter in charge.
Of course, a lot of focus has been on Tottenham. With Antonio Conte at the helm they have a manager who wants nothing else but to win. And he knows how to as well, given his success with Chelsea and Inter Milan. Conte was backed in the summer to the tune of more than £100m. However, things could have got even better for Conte and Spurs if they’d signed a certain Nicolo Barella.
Reports this weekend have claimed Spurs actually made a move for Barella, only to be shunned by Inter. But looking at that potential transfer, you have to say it’s one that would have been game changing.
Barella Makes Tottenham Title Contenders
Not that Tottenham aren’t in the mix as it stands right now. Under Conte, they’ve found a way to win games even when not at their best and you’d have to say they do stand a chance of a first PL title.
However, they’ll probably fall short purely on the size and depth of the quality in the squad. The addition of Nicolo Barella would have gone some way to addressing that.
Barella is a quality player. You don’t play regularly for Inter and Italy without being of a certain ilk. Indeed, you can’t be doing much wrong either if legendary coach Marcello Lippi deems you a ‘world class’ player. That sort of praise doesn’t come around often from such figures, so Barella is a serious talent.
Liverpool are known to be admirers of him as well. But you do feel that if Tottenham are serious about being consistent title contenders, then a signing like Barella is what will push them above clubs like Liverpool in the long-term.
