Tottenham Hotspur must ensure they keep hold of Christian Eriksen – or risk him becoming another Luka Modric.

According to The Mirror, the Danish midfielder has been in talks with the club for some time but an agreement hasn’t yet been reached.

Eriksen’s current £70,000-a-week deal expires in 18 months, and the club are keen not to let him enter his final year.

Spurs need to place him in the same bracket as top earners Harry Kane and Dele Alli, or risk losing him before he’s even hit his peak.

There are certainly shades of the Modric deal, especially with The Mirror reporting that Real Madrid are one of two European giants interested in signing him – the other being Paris Saint-Germain.

The Croatian maestro left for the Spanish capital in 2012 for a fee of £30 million (BBC Sport), after spending four excellent seasons in north London.

Spurs can’t let another one get away

Tottenham have done well to secure Alli, Kane and a number of others on long-term deals in recent times, but Eriksen is someone they absolutely cannot afford to lose.

World class on his day, Eriksen is at a similar level now to what Modric was on when he departed for Madrid.

The club have seen Modric go on to become arguably the best midfielder in the world at the Bernabeu.

The similarities between him and Eriksen are plainly obvious.

He has the ability to change the course of a match with his passing ability and vision, and he can also carry the ball just as Modric used to.

Ominously, Eriksen is now at the same age as Modric was when he left White Hart Lane. Spurs can’t let history repeat itself – they must show their ambition by paying the player his worth.
