It is no secret that Tottenham Hotspur are in the market for a new central midfielder.
Mauricio Pochettino has made this a priority position that needs sorting this month or by next summer.
With Mousa Dembele and Victor Wanyama’s futures in doubt, Spurs need a new long-term midfield option to compete with Harry Winks, Moussa Sissoko and Eric Dier.
Tottenham have been heavily linked with Wilmar Barrios in the past and those rumours could resurface this month.
Back in October, ESPN dismissed various media reports suggesting Barrios was close to moving to Tottenham.
But this January, Spurs are linked with him again, as per Spanish media outlet Don Balon.
If Spurs are serious about bringing in Barrios, they may be forced into action quickly as interest mounts in the midfield man.
Everton have now entered the hunt for the Colombia international, according to South American media outlet AS Argentina.
The 25-year-old could be at the centre of a tug of war between Everton and Tottenham if Pochettino decides to reignite his interest.
Whether Barrios is the right fit for Tottenham is another question.
On one hand, he had an indifferent World Cup, failed to impress against England and was recently sent off in the Copa Libertadores final against arch rivals River Plate.
On the other hand, many believe the Colombian midfielder is the long-term solution in holding midfield for Spurs.
But if Tottenham want to pursue a deal, they might need to act before Everton win the race.
